The Roots and Causes of Anxiety

Anxiety is often described as a feeling of worry or unease, but in reality, it’s far more complex. It’s not just a mental state - it’s a full-body experience that can affect how we think, feel, and act. For many, anxiety can become a constant companion, shaping decisions, relationships, and quality of life.

While occasional anxiety is a natural part of life - such as before an exam or a major life change - chronic anxiety can be deeply disruptive. To truly understand how to address it, we first need to explore its roots.

The Roots and Causes of Anxiety

Anxiety can develop for many reasons, and it often emerges from a combination of factors rather than one single cause. Early childhood experiences can play a significant role. Growing up in an unpredictable or unsafe environment, experiencing neglect, or feeling a persistent lack of emotional support can set the stage for heightened stress responses later in life.

Trauma, both large and small, can also contribute. For some, it’s a single event - like an accident or loss. For others, it’s a series of ongoing challenges, such as bullying, unstable relationships, or financial insecurity.

There are also biological factors at play. Genetics, brain chemistry, and even long-term physical health conditions can influence anxiety levels. And in our modern world, lifestyle pressures - constant connectivity, high job demands, economic instability - can amplify underlying vulnerabilities.

Common Symptoms of Anxiety

Anxiety doesn’t present the same way for everyone. Some symptoms are emotional, such as constant worry, fear of the worst happening, irritability, or feeling “on edge.” Others are physical: rapid heartbeat, muscle tension, headaches, digestive problems, or difficulty sleeping.

It’s also worth noting that anxiety often intertwines with other conditions like depression, burnout, or addictive behaviours. This overlap can make it harder for people to identify anxiety as the core issue.

Why Understanding Anxiety Matters

Recognising anxiety’s roots and symptoms is the first step toward managing it effectively. When we understand that anxiety is often a learned and conditioned response to life experiences - rather than a personal failing - we open the door to compassion and more effective treatment.

Counselling and psychotherapy can help uncover these underlying causes, create healthier coping strategies, and restore a sense of control. Whether working with the body’s stress response, challenging unhelpful thought patterns, or addressing past trauma, the goal is always to help you live with greater calm, clarity, and resilience.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be publishing a series of blogs exploring the different types of anxiety disorders -from Generalised Anxiety Disorder to social anxiety, panic disorders, and more - along with practical ways to manage them.
