Anxiety can take many different forms. For some, it is social situations that spark fear and self-doubt. For others, the focus is on health and wellbeing - often leading to what is known as health anxiety or illness anxiety disorder.

We all worry about our health from time to time. A headache might make us wonder if we’re stressed, or a persistent cough could lead us to check in with our GP. These responses are normal. But for people living with health anxiety, these worries become constant, intrusive, and overwhelming -often leading to significant distress and disruption in daily life.

The Roots of Health Anxiety
Health anxiety often develops from a mix of early experiences, personality traits, and stressful life events. For example, growing up in an environment where illness was present or feared can leave deep-seated worries that resurface in adulthood. Trauma, unresolved grief, or even perfectionist tendencies can also contribute.
At its core, health anxiety is about control and uncertainty. When the body presents natural sensations or symptoms, they may be misinterpreted as signs of serious illness. This misinterpretation creates a cycle of fear: the more the worry is focused on, the stronger the anxiety becomes.

Common Symptoms
People experiencing health anxiety may:
🔹Frequently check their bodies for signs of illness.
🔹Repeatedly seek reassurance from doctors, family, or online sources.
🔹Avoid medical settings entirely due to fear of bad news.
🔹Experience physical symptoms such as racing heart, tension, or stomach upset that are actually caused by anxiety itself.
This cycle can be exhausting and isolating. It’s not “just worrying too much” - it’s a powerful pattern that can feel impossible to break alone.

How Counselling Can Help
Working with a counsellor or psychotherapist can provide a safe and non-judgemental space to explore the deeper causes of health anxiety. Together, we can:
🔹Identify the underlying beliefs and fears driving the anxiety.
🔹Understand how past experiences or family dynamics may have shaped these patterns.
🔹Develop healthier coping strategies to reduce reassurance-seeking and rumination.
🔹Explore techniques for emotional regulation, self-compassion, and resilience.
Over time, counselling can help shift the focus from constant worry about illness toward living a fuller, more balanced life.
