June marks Men’s Mental Health Month - an important time to spotlight the unique challenges men face when it comes to emotional wellbeing, mental health, and asking for support.

Across the UK, the statistics paint a stark picture. Suicide remains the single biggest killer of men under 50. Around 75% of all suicides are male. Behind these numbers are real lives - sons, fathers, husbands, tradesmen, professionals, and friends - struggling with pain they often feel unable to express.

Many of the men I work with as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist carry invisible burdens. Anxiety, depression, addiction, burnout, anger, and unresolved trauma often sit just beneath the surface. What makes these struggles harder is the deep cultural message so many men have absorbed since childhood: that emotion is weakness, that asking for help is “Weak,” and that the only acceptable feelings are anger or stoicism.

These generational beliefs are deeply embedded, passed down in silent ways - from fathers, peers, workplaces, and media. And they leave many men emotionally cut off, isolated, and battling inner turmoil with no outlet.

Men’s Mental Health Month is about changing this narrative. It’s about creating space for men to talk - without shame or judgement. Therapy offers that space. It’s not about “fixing” men. It’s about listening, supporting, and helping them reconnect to parts of themselves they’ve had to hide.

In my practice at CALM Counselling and Life Management, I use an integrative approach - drawing from person-centred therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), addiction psychology, and trauma-informed care - to help men explore their inner worlds safely and constructively. Whether someone is dealing with stress at work, unresolved grief, relationship breakdown, or substance misuse, there is a way forward.

If you’re a man struggling silently, or if someone you care about is, this month is a reminder: you’re not alone. Support exists. And reaching out is not a failure - it’s a powerful act of strength.
